Is a more expensive forensic accountant better?
Short answer. No. Price reflects a firm's overheads and brand as much as the quality of the work. A good forensic accountant asks the right question, tests the evidence, and explains conclusions that survive cross-examination. Those things don't come with a premium price tag.
What decides the quality
A business owner suspects money has gone missing. Finding out depends on reading the right bank statements, sales records and cash movements, and on testing each explanation against them. None of that improves because the hourly rate is higher.
Five questions to ask before you hire
- Have you handled this kind of matter before?
- How would you approach mine, and what would you look at first?
- Can you define the work and give me a fixed fee?
- Will you tell me if the evidence doesn’t support my suspicion?
- Will the report be in plain English, with the reasoning shown?
Red flags
- A promised outcome before anyone has seen the records.
- A vague scope with an open-ended hourly rate.
- An answer that can’t be explained without jargon.
When a large firm makes sense
Very large, multi-country investigations with huge data volumes may need a big team. Most business, family law and payroll matters don’t. They need an experienced specialist who will do the work personally.
